Liberal Democrat Candidates for Worcestershire County Council

May 11, 2009 12:00 AM

The Liberal Democrats are contesting ten of the eleven electoral divisions that are wholly or partly in Mid-Worcestershire for the County Council elections to be held on Thursday 4th June. The candidates are as follows:

Bowbrook - Stephanie Vale

Stephanie has lived in Droitwich for more than 30 years and has two grown up daughters. She has taught in primary schools and so, naturally, has a keen interest in education and the arts in general, still pursuing this interest as a part-time music teacher. She is also interested in both the local and wider environment, including planning, and so it follows that she would like to promote green issues and especially the provision of safe cycle paths which would both protect the environment and the health of the population in general.

Broadway - Carol Kershaw

I was born in Evesham and went into nursing at the age of 18 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, then left when my triplets arrived. When they were three, I started up a nursery school. I now have five grandchildren. I worked at the Citizen's Advice Bureau for nine years. Over the years I have been a voluntary worker with several organisations, including Save the Children and Oxfam. I ran courses in alternative medicine at Lichfield College and worked abroad, before returning to England to live at Charlton about six years ago.

Droitwich East - Margaret Rowley

Margaret has lived in Tibberton, near Droitwich Spa for the last 20 years. Her three children were educated at Droitwich High School and she is a former parent governor of Westacre Middle School. She is a Wychavon District Councillor and campaigned strongly for the re-opening of the Lido. As Chairman of Droitwich Canals Trust for the last 10 years she is looking forward to the completion of the restoration project next year. Her priorities for the county council are to stop wasteful spending, insist on better care for the elderly, improve facilities for the young and get more joined-up planning.

Evesham North West - Diana Brown

I have lived in the Evesham area and its surrounds for 19 years. Since 1991 my husband and I have established a nursery business in Badsey employing local people. Active in the community, I have been a district councillor for Evesham. I have also been involved with youth groups and community issues, recently producing a village plan, I worked for many years in education, both as a teacher and administrator, and am familiar with many issues in education. I am also concerned about support for the vulnerable members of our community.

Evesham South - Judith Selcuk

I am the proud mother of three girls aged from 20 months to 11 years. I have been married to Memento for 13 years and we settled in Evesham six years ago. On moving here from Ireland I worked in Stratford-upon-Avon for the Disability Rights Commission. Once my middle daughter started school I retrained as a teaching assistant at Evesham college and began employment at Honeybourne First School, teaching IT and further literacy. I have a keen interest in the education of our young constituents, ensuring they receive the education they deserve and the opportunities to access the tools they require to succeed as adults.

Harvington - James Stanley

It seems ever clearer that the people of this country desire change, both in terms of policy and in the political system generally, and the Liberal Democrats offer that change. At a local level, we will seek to protect and enhance the position of those least able to defend themselves. In specific terms, that means the old, those sick and the young. Liberal Democrats believe in and will strengthen local government. The Liberal Democrats have acracking team in parliament, particularly our treasury team led by Vince Cable. Now is the time to elect the party that believes in local government. I look forward to your support.

Ombersley - Peter Evans

I have lived in Wychbold, near Droitwich, since 1980. I am currently in my 10th year as chairman of governors at Droitwich Spa High School, and also serve as governor at a school for emotionally and behaviourally disturbed children in Birmingham. I am a trustee of Children Today, a national charity for children with disabilities. In the past, I have served on Dodderhill Parish Council for 10 years (two as chairman) and Wychbold Village Hall for 14 years (all as chairman). I am currently chief executive of a major national credit union.

Pershore - Liz Tucker

Liz has lived at Throckmorton, near Pershore since 1975. First elected to the county council in 1981, she has represented Pinvin wad since then and Pershore from 2005. Liz was Leader of Hereford and Worcester County Council from 1993 - 1998 and then deputy leader of the new Worcestershire County Council up to 2001. For the last four years she has led the county's environmental scrutiny which persuaded the council to invest an extra £15 million into town and road maintenance. She is chairman of the trustees at the Pershore Riverside Youth Centre and serves as a governor of Pershore High School.

Upton Snodsbury - Charles Tucker

I have lived at Throckmorton since 1975. I took early retirement from the Environment Agency in 2007 after a long career in water pollution control and waste management. I have a special interest in flooding and storm water, and am now vice-chairman of the National Flood Forum which aims to speak for flood victims and flood-affected communities at local and national level. I am a parish councillor for Bishampton and Throckmorton Parish Councils, and I am a Wychavon councillor for Pershore. I also serve on Pershore Town Council, where I am chairman

The Littletons - Tom Bean

I have represented the Littletons Division on Worcestershire County Council for the last 12 years. I have lived in the area all my life and was educated at Offenham School, Prince Henry's Grammar School and London University. I am a retired farmer, married to Jean with a grown up family of four and one grandchild. I have built up a very detailed knowledge of the area and its particular problems. Ever since I was first elected in 1997, I have fought against any vehicle weight restriction in Willesley, and am opposed to the eco-town proposal. Among many projects I am currently championing are a 30mph speed limit at Blackminster and a new fire station at Pebworth.
