Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, has laid out Government plans for action on climate change at home and abroad. Commenting on his first Annual Energy Statement to the House of Commons, Chris said "We're already on track to cut the UK's emissions by 34% by 2020, but our line of sight needs to extend much further, through to the middle of the century. The era of cheap, abundant energy is over, and we must find smart ways of making the energy we use go further."
Cllr Margaret Rowley has welcomed the Statement. "Climate change could have a devastating effect if left unchecked. Chris Huhne has put forward detailed plans for national and international action to tackle carbon reduction and to improve energy efficiency and promote the use of renewable energy. Further reforms of the energy market to promote low-carbon energy generation will follow in the Energy Bill. These are all long held Liberal Democrat proposals which will now become reality."
